Footscray 3011
Footscray sits in the City of Maribyrnong, six kilometres west of the CBD, and runs the full residential and commercial mix that defines inner-west Melbourne.
The suburb is part Federation cottage, part warehouse conversion, part busy retail strip and part new apartment development around the station. The window furnishings work splits across all of those categories.
Period homes that take Roman blinds and plantation shutters, apartment glazing that takes solar film and S-fold sheers, and a long stretch of shopfronts along Barkly Street, Hopkins Street and Nicholson Street that take anti-graffiti, frosted privacy and security film.
We cover Footscray, West Footscray and the southern edge that runs into Yarraville.

What we install in Footscray
Recent Footscray jobs include a full plantation shutter fit-out across the front three rooms of a restored Edwardian cottage near the Gordon Street strip, with the matched Roman blinds on the rear extension supplied at the same time.
We also installed anti-graffiti film on three retail tenancies along Barkly Street after a single tagging incident affected the whole block, and ran a frosted privacy band on the lower frontage of a hospitality fit-out closer to the station.
A warehouse-conversion apartment took a full S-fold sheer wrap across the riverside glazing.

Local knowledge
Footscray up close
Footscray housing stock
Footscray housing is unusually mixed. The original residential stock is Federation and Edwardian timber cottages on the streets between Geelong Road and the river, many with heritage overlay status that limits external changes but does not affect internal window furnishings.
A second band of Californian bungalows and 1920s and 1930s brick homes fills out the central residential pocket.
The past fifteen years have brought significant warehouse-to-apartment conversion along the river and around Footscray station, plus a wave of new mid-rise apartment buildings on the older commercial fringe.
Townhouse infill is common across blocks where original cottages have been subdivided or demolished. Hopkins Street, Barkly Street and Nicholson Street carry the long active commercial strip with mixed-era shopfronts.
The window mix runs from original timber-framed sashes in the cottages through industrial-era warehouse glazing to modern aluminium framing in the apartments and commercial glazing along the strip.
Sun and climate
Footscray sits inland enough that maritime moderation has minimal effect on summer afternoons, but mature canopy across the older residential streets softens direct sun on most cottage blocks.
Apartments along the river and around the station typically face open sky with no canopy shading, which means west-facing units run hot through summer afternoons and east-facing units take strong morning load.
The original Federation cottages were built with small windows by today's standards, so heat load on the original glazing is generally manageable through fabric and Roman blinds.
The rear extensions that almost every cottage has added in the past twenty years are the real heat problem because most carry large floor-to-ceiling glazing onto a small north-facing courtyard.
Winter is moderate, with the cottages losing heat through single-glazed sashes and the apartments holding heat well due to their thermal mass.
What works in Footscray
Footscray residential work splits cleanly by housing era. Federation and Edwardian cottages take painted timber plantation shutters in 89mm blade beautifully on the front rooms, with Roman blinds in linen or weave fabric on the smaller side and bathroom windows.
The rear glass extensions added to most cottages take an S-fold sheer in a heavier linen weave on a ceiling track, often paired with a blockout roller behind on a separate track for evening privacy.
Warehouse-conversion apartments along the river suit S-fold sheers across the larger industrial-scale glazing and blockout rollers on the bedroom windows.
Newer apartments around the station take vertical blinds on sliders for rental fit-outs and S-fold sheers for owner-occupiers. The commercial strip is where we do most of the film work in Footscray.
Anti-graffiti film on street-facing glass is the regular request because tagging incidents along Barkly Street and Nicholson Street are common enough that landlords now spec the film at lease start.
Frosted privacy film handles the lower band of cafe and hospitality fronts; security film is increasingly common on jewellers and pharmacies.

Common questions in Footscray
Yes. Footscray is around 18 km from Fraser Rise by road and well inside the standard 40 km radius. The free in-home measure and written quote are no charge.
Internal plantation shutters do not. Anything visible from the public realm or affecting the structure of a heritage-listed property requires a planning conversation with Maribyrnong council, but internal blinds and shutters that sit inside the architrave are not regulated. We work inside the existing window line on every period install.
Yes. Anti-graffiti film is a standard install for Barkly Street, Hopkins Street and Nicholson Street tenancies. The film is a sacrificial layer applied over the existing glass; if the glass is tagged, the film is replaced rather than the glass. After-hours installation is available where the shop is trading through the day.
Painted timber plantation shutters in 89mm or 114mm blade are the natural fit on Federation and Edwardian front rooms. Roman blinds in linen or weave fabric suit the smaller windows. S-fold sheers belong in the rear extension where the larger modern glazing reads as a separate architectural element to the period front of the home.
Yes. The industrial-scale glazing typical of warehouse conversions suits a few different approaches depending on the look you want. S-fold sheers in oat or off-white work for owner-occupiers who want a residential softness against the industrial shell. Blockout rollers on bedroom windows are the standard companion. The original steel-framed glazing on some heritage conversions affects the install method, which we walk through at the measure.
