Yes, a double-track setup is the most popular combination in new Melbourne homes. The front track carries the sheer, which stays drawn all day for soft filtered light and daytime privacy. The back track carries a lined blockout curtain that pulls across at night. Both tracks can be ceiling-mounted so the curtains run floor to ceiling with no visible brackets. This combination handles light control, privacy, thermal insulation and acoustics in one fitting.
Curtains are a higher-cost product than roller blinds. A single-track sheer on a standard window runs $250 to $400 installed depending on fabric and ceiling height. A double-track sheer-and-blockout combination runs $400 to $700 per window. By comparison, a roller blind on the same window costs $150 to $200. The difference is the fabric volume, the track hardware, and the longer manufacturing time. Most people use curtains in living areas and master bedrooms where the softer look matters, and rollers through secondary bedrooms and utility rooms.
S-fold uses a continuous wave former clipped into the track at even intervals, so the curtain ripples in uniform waves and stacks flat when open. It reads clean and modern, and is the default in new builds with floor-to-ceiling glazing. Pinch pleat is hand-gathered into two or three folds at the top of each hook point, creating a more structured, tailored drape. It suits period homes, formal rooms, and heavier fabrics that need the weight distributed at fixed points. S-fold is slightly cheaper because the heading is simpler to manufacture.
Noticeably, yes. A lined blockout curtain with a decent fabric weight absorbs mid and high-frequency sound, including conversation, TV and traffic noise, in a way hard window coverings cannot. Homes near busy roads in suburbs like Footscray, Yarraville and the inner west often combine curtains with solar film: the film handles heat and UV, the curtain handles noise and light at night.
